Citi Bike is NYC’s largest bike share program, with 8,000 bikes and 500 stations across Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. It was designed for quick trips with convenience in mind, and it’s a fun and affordable way to get around town. However, what happens when you need sewer or water main repairs and there’s a Citi Bike station in front or on your property? Who is responsible to move Citi Bike so work on your water main or sewer lines can begin?
if a Citi Bike station is installed on your property and your water main breaks or sewer needs to be replaced, the property and/or homeowner is responsible for the cost to move the Citi Bike station and bicycles, so repairs can be made. When your water line or sewer needs to be repaired or installed, Citi Bike will not help the property owner with the cost of moving the station. There is no workaround to get to the water lines that are installed underground. NYC Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) will charge the local plumber who is doing the repair/install of the sewer or water main with taking down the Citi Bike station. This cost is then pass onto the property owner in addition to the cost of the repair of the sewer or water main. Sidewalks and streets need to be dug in order to get to the water and sewer lines. The cost of moving a Citi Bike station starts at $8,000.00 and loss of revenue is also charged on a daily basis until repair restores service. The station, bicycles and anything related to Citi Bike would need to be removed prior to work being done.
